The China-made mobile phones are copies of the brands produced by various multinational companies. According to the dealers and buyers, the business of Chinese mobile phones is increasing day by day and whenever any multinational company introduces a mobile phone with a new and pricey design, its Chinese copy also makes it to the market with a lower price.
Riaz Ahmed, a dealer of Chinese mobile phone sets, told Daily Times that mainly the Chinese mobiles were brought from Lahore and were popular among those in the low income bracket, who want to enjoy several features at lower prices.
“But a drawback is that these phones have no warranty. You may use them for a year, but they might go out of order within days,” he added. He said nowadays many buyers preferred the Chinese phones, which he said were inexpensive and had all the latest features that other cellular phone companies were offering at higher rates.
N-series: Ahmed said the Chinese versions of Nokia N series, Xpress Music and Nokia 6,300 were very popular among people. He said the original Nokia 6,300 set was available for Rs 12,000 in the market, while its Chinese version was available at around Rs 4,000-5,000. “Nokia N-95 is available for around Rs 37,000 and its Chinese version costs only 7,800, while Nokia Xpress Music costs Rs 17,000 and its Chinese model is priced around Rs 5,000. There is a big difference in terms of prices and when one uses a set for three to six he feels fed up with it. People do not feel comfortable selling an expensive set at cheaper rates,” he continued. The mobile phone dealer also said, “The most expensive Chinese set available at my shop costs around Rs 9,200, which has multimedia facilities like television. Chinese phones as cheap as Rs 2,400 are also available but these sets lack a memory card,” he said.
Shahzad, a salesman at a shop in Saddar, told Daily Times that until a month ago, they did not have China-made phones, but that keeping in view their increasing demand, he bought a stock of these phones with the consultation of the shop owner.
Shahzad said Chinese versions of other popular brands introduced by famous mobile companies like Sony Ericsson and Samsung were also available in the market, with the Chinese versions in 1, 2 and 3 rankings. Mainly people from the rural areas, who cannot afford to buy expensive sets, prefer Chinese phones,” he said.
Jalil Khan, a non-government organisation worker, said while buying a Chinese Nokia-6,300 phone, “I do not like keeping the same mobile phone for a long time.” He said all features that the original version possessed were also available in the Chinese version.
